he had ever smelled. He wanted outout of the cave and off the mountain, but the rain was still coming down like silver buckshot and at any second he expected to see some old guy with a beard come by collecting animals two by two.
"I guess I don't like small spaces," he replied.
The sun was going down. With the overcast, no one else would have been able to tell, but Cyrus could feel it and rain or no rain he longed to escape the confines of the cave and run in the forest. Kyna would be safe in the cave. The opening at the back was no threat. All that lay beyond it was a lot of old dead things.
"You hungry?" he asked.
"I could eat a horse, raw."
"You may have to."
Cyrus got to his feet and began struggling with his wet clothing.
"What are you doing?"
"I'm going to see if I can find us something to eat."
He had to sit on the ground to get his jeans off and by the time he was undressed, his body was one big goose bump.
"That's nuts," she replied. "You'll drown before you get ten feet."
"I don't have time to argue. I've got to change before I freeze to death. Now, as soon as I leave, throw some more wood on the fire and get out of that wet jacket and sweatertry to keep warm. I won't be long."
"Yes, Mother. What do you think you're going to find out there?"
He scratched his head. "Well, it's not going to be Caesar salad, that's for danged sure."
"Don't you dare bring me anything with fur on it."
"Right. One owl sandwich, coming up."
Kyna punched him on the arm, but at the same time little tears formed at the corners of her eyes. Against her pale skin they made her seem so very young and fragile. Cyrus hugged her to him and pressed his lips to hers stealing some of her warmth and vitality. Then he held her at arm's length.
